I find that although some Hexbugs are underpowered compared to others in the line or less well designed, you can modify them to make the action more realistic and evenly matched. My Hexbug Witch Doctor (season 3 version) has two armor configurations (original front piece as anti-horizontal armor and two flat cardboard armor panels that allow the weapon to make better contact). You can also use cardboard to make custom armor panels. Bigger gaps require thicker tapes to avoid unnecessary bending which could cause a bot to high center itself. If the gap is small, then simply use clear scotch tape as it will be thin and won't be noticed except performance wise.
